MALAYSIA:::Foreign workers still coming in despite hiring freeze

"Employers taking own initiative by going overseas to source for workers from particular countries, after conflicting statements from authorities, says MEF"

Companies are still bringing in foreign workers despite the freeze on the hiring of foreign manpower in February this year.
The confusion on the matter is due to unclear and conflicting statements from the authorities concerned, The Star reported

"In this regard, the Company's counsel had highlighted the fact that this court had ordered a salary adjustment of 8% which was higher than the preceding collective agreements. In making that order, this court had taken into account the fact that the last salary adjustment for the Union members was made on 30 April 2009. Therefore, it was never the case that the court had not taken all these factors into consideration. I must also emphasise that the order for the 8% increment in salary was a unanimous decision of the court in the said Award "

MTUC: Putrajaya must have clear policy on foreign workers

"The union has received information that foreign workers continue to arrive in the country in alarming numbers."

 The absence of a clear policy on foreign workers is not good for Malaysia’s image and reputation both in the domestic and international arena, MTUC Secretary-General N Gopal Kishnam has cautioned in a statement. “The government must have a clear policy to avoid confusion among all parties involved.”
