MTUC wants foreign maids to be legally protected

KUALA LUMPUR : The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) today called on the government to extend the coverage of the Employment Act 1955 to the 200,000 foreign maids in the country.
Its president, Mohd Khalid Atan, said foreign maids are not covered by the act and are subject to abuse by their employers.
In a statement in conjunction with the International Women's Day, he said MTUC had submitted a memorandum to the Human Resources Ministry on the matter.
International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8.
Mohd Khalid added that the maids would be able to get legal protection and assistance if they were covered by the act. – Bernama
