VIOLENCE AGAINST WORKERS - MASTERMINDED BY MAFIA
J Solomon

Who is the "Mafia" we referred to? Why do we call him a "Mafia"?

The term "Mafia" refers to a secret criminal organization operating mainly in Sicily, Italy since the early 19th century and is known for its intimidation and punishment against the law.

"Modern day Mafias” are those who reflect similar criminal activities by those in power. The person who conspires with employers to exploit workers including members of NUBE is a “Mafia”.

Malaysia decides on May 5.

The election regulator, which met this morning, also set April 20 as the nomination date, which will signal the start of formal electoral campaigns.
Yesterday, commission chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof hinted it may depart from tradition and fix polling for Election 2013 to take place on a weekday, but today stuck to the norm by choosing a Sunday.
Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced the dissolution of Parliament on April 3, four years to the date from when he took office in 2009, replacing Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as prime minister mid-term after the Penang lawmaker led Barisan Nasional (BN) to its worst performance since 1963.
The 13-party coalition lost its customary two-thirds majority in Parliament as well as five states in Election 2008.
Some 13.3 million Malaysians are eligible to vote in the 13th general election, touted to be a tight race between a formidable three-party Pakatan Rakyat and the BN, which has held federal power for an uninterrupted 56 years.
A total of 222 parliamentary and 505 state seats will be contested. Sarawak will sit out this round of elections as the Borneo state went to the polls in 2011.

"Confidential, concrete and in consensus"
The right of workers and employers to create and join organisations of their own choice freely and without fear of reprisal or interference - to freely associate with whomever they choose - is a fundamental right that the ILO's Declaration of Philadelphia calls "essential for sustained progress of societies worldwide". For over 60 years, the ILO Committee on Freedom of Association (CFA) has examined more than 3,000 complaints about violations of this right. Paul van der Heijden, Chair of the CFA since 2002, discusses the work of the Committee and the special role it plays in the ILO's supervisory procedures.

Probe factory fire, says MTUC

Balakrishnan
BALAKRISHNAN: 'Department should find out if there is possibility of radiation exposure'
THE Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) has asked the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to investigate the fire at the chemical factory here that killed two workers last week.
It said the department should find out if there was a possibility of radiation exposure.
Penang MTUC safety and health committee chairman N. Balakrishnan said DOSH should make its findings public to prevent similar incidents from taking place.
“It is sad to note that two workers died. It is a loss to the family, the management and the nation, and something concrete has to be done to prevent future loss of lives,” he told a press conference at his office in Prai yesterday.
One worker died on the spot and another in hospital two days after the fire, during which an explosion took place, at the factory at the Prai Industrial Estate on March 25.
Balakrishnan said the investigation would show whether there was negligence on the side of the management and if it had provided a safe and healthy environment to the employees.
He said MTUC was also concerned about the status of three other workers who suffered severe burns, one of whom was in a critical condition at Seberang Jaya Hospital.
“We are of the opinion such incidents can be prevented if managements adhered to the safety system provided for under Section 15 (2) of the Occupational, Safety and Health Act, 1994," he said.
Balakrishnan said DOSH should investigate the types of chemicals stored in the factory and the cause of the fire and explosion.
"Our initial investigations revealed radiation caused burns on the body of a worker who was on an upper floor," he said.
"We want to know whether there was proper supervision, and instructions and training provided to the workers to face such an eventuality.”

Kongres Kesatuan Sekerja Malaysia (MTUC)
