MALAYSIA - Minimum wage complaints: Don’t lie Riot

KUCHING: A human rights NGO has slammed Human Resource Minister Richard Riot for claiming that neither the Malaysian Trade Union Congress ( MTUC) nor any individuals or organisations had not complained about the abuse of the minimum wage policy.
The Oppressed People Network (Jerit) said Riot’s claim was a “blatant lie”.
Jerit secretary M Sivaranjani said Riot had reportedly said earlier this week that  there were no complaints from MTUC, or any individuals on the misuse of minimum wage policy or of it not being implemented by the employers.

MALAYSIA - New EPF rules… good for retirement, bad for unit trust industry

Malaysia's largest pension fund has decided to raise the minimum savings for its contributors to ensure they have more money in their twilight years, but this indirectly cuts investments into the country's vibrant unit trust industry.
The new rules by the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) to cut investments in unit trusts comes at a time when rising costs have shown contributors' savings are not enough to cover retirement after turning 55, five years below Putrajaya's new retirement age of 60.
“The EPF will revise upwards the basic savings quantum of its members to RM196,800 by the age of 55 effective January 2014, to ensure enough savings to finance members' retirement needs,”

Sambil menghirup teh tarik, dia buka cerita.

A good TPP should put people first by respecting International Labor Organization core labor rights, protecting the environment, not allowing special rights to foreign investors to bypass local, state and national laws and promoting access to lifesaving medicines with fair patent rules.

Illegal immigrants in Malaysia lead difficult lives

It is a struggle for Myanmar national Aung Aung, 44, even to pay for a single meal a day after he was dismissed from work.
The former machine operator from Yangon said he could not re-register himself for a work permit after it expired in March.
“I am worried that I will be deported. We are not looking for trouble in Malaysia. All we want is a job so that we could feed our families back home,” he said on Sunday.
Aung, who earned about 50 ringgit (US$15.16) per day, said he had paid some 5,000 ringgit ($1,515) to agents to renew his work permit, but there was no response from them.
His countryman Aye Nyie Aung, 33, said his work permit would expire soon.
“Now, I am unemployed, and I have little money to renew my permit,” he added.
Suherman, 34, an Indonesian who was apprehended for not having proper documents, claimed that his boss had tricked him into paying for a permit, but did not give him one.
“I gave him 3,000 ringgit ($909) and I’m very angry,” he said during a raid in Dengkil at 3am on Sunday.
When asked why he did not seek assistance under the 6P programme, Suherman said he was afraid to do so.
“I came into the country illegally.”
In another raid at a squatter house in Bukit Raja, Klang, Indonesian Faizatul Abror, who is in her 20s, had earlier obtained for an extension on her permit after she read news about the 6P programme.
“I’ve been working here for five years. If I’m going to continue working here, I should have all the right papers,” she added.
In Johor Baru, Bangladeshi national Mohd Azad Hossain is afraid that he would be detained despite having registered for the 6P programme two years ago.
The 35-year-old, who came to Malaysia in 1995, claimed that another foreigner who was working in Kuala Lumpur had used his personal details to register for the programme.
“I registered myself on 5 Aug 2011,” he explained. “But when I wanted to update my information with the Immigration Department last year, I found that someone else had used my details to register as a legal worker.”

MALAYSIA - MTUC (Malaysian Trades Union Congress) Rejects TPPA

Khalid Atan
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 (Bernama)-- The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has urged the government not to sign the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), claiming that it would be detrimental to the well-being of 12.5 million Malaysian workers.

Its president, Khalid Atan said the feedback it had received from friendly labour organisations in other countries, including the United States, showed that workers would be at the losing end as big corporations' priority was dividends for shareholders.

He told Bernama that the agreement would also sideline many International Labour Organisation's (ILO) conventions on workers rights, thus exposing Malaysian workers to exploitation.

Another area of concern is healthcare cost in Malaysia which increases 10 per cent annually, he said, adding that this would raise the prices further due to expensive drugs, thus would greatly burden the workers.

Khalid said the agreement would also allow US firms to employ foreigners, thus suppressing wages and delaying the government's plan to turn Malaysia into a high-income nation by 2020.

He said the agreement would also give US companies the right to sue the government through their dispute settlement mechanism.

Khalid hoped the government would seriously consider the threat to workers' future and the nation's prosperity before signing the agreement as big corporations would steamroll their interest without scant concern for the workers or the country.
