Penang MTUC wants answers Official: Crucial to strictly observe safety measures and SOP

BUTERWORTH: The bridge ramp collapse in Batu Maung will be classified as an industrial accident, said Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Penang secretary K. Veeriah (pic).
He said the MTUC wanted to know if acceptable safety measures and standard operating procedures (SOP) were strictly observed during the construction process.
He said MTUC was saddened by the incident and sympathised with family members of the victims.
“It is crucial especially in the construction industry for safety measures to be taken seriously.
“We are shocked by recent incidents involving the construction industry.

“In March, an unused flyover near the Selangor Science Park 2 interchange in Cyberjaya collapsed and early this month, a crane fell at a construction site in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.
“The Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Terengganu collapsed for the second time when a steel structure holding up the roof gave way and injured five workers in February,” he said in an interview yesterday.
Veeriah also took to task the contractors of the second Penang bridge for not diverting traffic to a safe distance away from the construction site so that the public would not be exposed to any risk while work was ongoing there.
“The contractor should have also carried out work during off-peak hours by closing off the particular section to traffic.
“There are a few alternative roads near the site where the traffic could have been diverted, to protect the safety of motorists travelling in the area,” he said.
