MALAYSIA:::New MTUC Team Ready To Adopt New Strategies
PETALING JAYA, Dec 23 (Bernama) -- A more united, concerted and coordinated effort to fight for the rights of workers will be the order of the day for the newly-elected Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) team.
Its second term president, Khalid Atan told Bernama today that his new team comprising talented individuals in various fields would adopt new approaches and strategies based on research and facts to forge new relationship with the industry and government.
Among those who were elected with him at the recently concluded delegates conference were his deputy Abdullah Sani who is also Kuala Langat MP, secretary- general N.Gopalakrishnam and financial secretary Awang Ebrahim.
Khalid said his team's immediate focus would be to ensure that workers were not unduly affected by the rising cost of living.
"We are all very concerned with the recent hike in the prices of fuel and sugar and impending rise in electricity, school bus fares and toll charges.
"We know that the majority of workers who are in the low income bracket would be the hardest hit and we want the government to work out a safety net for them," he said.
Khalid said the congress faced a daunting task of seeking the government's agreement to repel and amend several pieces of legislation which were very detrimental to the workers.
He also offered an olive branch to both the government and employers to work with his team to build a united and prosperous nation.
