ASEAN member countries will likely unveil the standard on promoting and protecting the rights of migrant workers by next month, said Aye Myint, minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security.
Aye Myint was commenting on the outcome of the 23rdAsean Labour Ministers Meeting (ALMM) held in Nay Pi Taw on May 22.
“Agreement made at this meeting would next week be circulated to ASEAN member countries. This must match the standard of International Labour Organisation. The member countries would respond. If it is needed to revise, negotiations will be carried out and the agreement would be published,” he said.
The introduction of ASEAN Economic Community in 2015 will enhance the movement of migrants within the region, he said, calling for the development of skilled workforce.
He said the ALMM agreed to provide added measures for migrant workers.
“Each country has its own standard and laws for workers. The ALMM agrees to provide more protection regarding wages, rights, and security of migrant workers. ASEAN countries would approve the equal standard for migrant workers to enjoy the same rights as the locals,” he said.
He also stated that labour laws should be revised to meet new challenges, arguing for the compliance of International Labour Organisation standard.
The ALMM focused on upgrading work skills and safeguarding the rights and benefits of migrants.
