MALAYSIA:::MTUC raps Taib-linked firm for 'union-busting'

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has expressed shock and disgust with the conduct of Cahaya Mata Sarawak (CMS) Cement Sdn Bhd, a public-listed company linked to the family of Sarawak Yang diPertua and former chief minister Taib Mahmud, towards the company's in-house trade union.

MTUC secretary Andrew said today after the company’s in-house union submitted a claim for recognition for collective bargaining in June 2014, the company sacked both the union president and secretary, apart from transferring two committee members.

MTUC said it regretted the "blatant discrimination" of the cement company "simply because the union submitted a claim for recognition".

"It is shocking and totally unconscionable that, in the 21st century, a public-listed company that has benefitted from multi-million contracts from both the state and federal governments is allowed to bully and discriminate employees in such a manner," Lo said.

The recognition bid finally saw only 10 percent of employees casting their votes because of "intimidation tactics" by company managers, MTUC said.

The in-house union has already filed a police report and also submitted a report to the director-general of industrial relations on the matter.

Malaysiakini has contacted CMS Cement regarding the allegations made by MTUC and is awaiting its response.
