MALAYSIA - Socso Benefits For Taxi Drivers Begins 2015

KUCHING, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- The provision of Social Security (Socso) benefits to taxi drivers under a new protection system is expected to begin in 2015, says chief executive Datuk K. Selvarajah.

He said the new protection system would allow most taxi drivers working on their own to contribute towards Socso to safeguard their welfare.

"The result of a study which is being conducted on taxi drivers in the Klang Valley by Socso's actuary experts indicated a need for the new scheme to be introduced to safeguard the welfare of taxi drivers nationwide.

"The work pattern of the taxi drivers differs as there is no interaction between the employers and workers, because they (taxi drivers) often work up to 24 hours," he told a press conference after a function at the Kuching Socso office here Saturday.

Selvarajah said since the scope of work of the taxi drivers differed from other jobs, the new protection system formulated would be different because currently, there was no contribution and employer-employee relationship in the daily duties of a taxi driver.

Also present at the event were Human Resources Minister Datuk Richard Riot Jaem and Sosco board chairman Datuk Abu Huraira Abu Yazid.
