KUALA LUMPUR: About 40 contributors of the Social Security Organisation (Socso) are diagnosed as invalid (ilat) and incapable of working due to non-contagious illness, daily.
According to Human Resources Ministry director-general Datuk Seri Saripuddin Kassim, a total of 8,912 claims of invalidity pension benefits due to illness such as diabetes, hypertension and cancer were recorded last year.
“It involved benefit payment totalling RM660 million, which was an increase of over 90 per cent from the number recorded 10 years ago,” he told reporters after flagging off the participants of Socso Run and Ride 2015 here yesterday.

Also present were Socso chairman Datuk Abu Huraira Abu Yazid and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed.
Meanwhile, Abu Huraira said some 1.65 million eligible contributors had yet to undergo the free medical screening offered by Socso.
Only 439,000 of Socso contributors had taken the opportunity to undergo the screening so far and 73 per cent of them were diagnosed with obesity, high cholesterol level (62 per cent), hypertension (27 per cent) and diabetes (9 per cent), he said.
Eligible contributors can set their appointment for the medical screening through their employers or contact Socso hotline at 1-300-22-8000, he added. — Bernama
