MALAYSIA::Dry Spell: Provide Adequate Drinking Water Facilities For Workers, MTUC Urges Employers

Employers should ensure adequate drinking water facilities are available at convenient and visible locations for the benefit of workers during the current extreme hot weather resulting from the El Nino phenomenon.
In making this call, Malaysian Trades Union Congress deputy secretary-general A. Balasubramaniam said adequate water facilities would prevent health complications and ensure continued worker productivity.

"Employers should provide plenty of drinking water and disposable cups in convenient, visible locations, especially for onsite workers.
"They should also designate a knowledgeable person (well-informed on heat-related illnesses) at the worksite to determine appropriate work/rest schedules.
"Employers should also provide adequate medical services at work places to respond to heat-related illnesses and medical emergencies without delay.
"In the event heavy job tasks cannot be avoided during the current heat wave, employers can always change work/rest cycles to increase the amount of rest time," he told Bernama here today.
Due to the El Nino weather pattern this month, Malaysia expects to see warmer-than-usual weather and reduced rainfall.
