MALAYSIA’S MTUC DELEGATES SHARE EXPERIENCE, VIEWS WITH LEADING INDIAN TRADE UNION

NEW DELHI, India March 4 (NNN-Bernama) -- Eighteen unionists of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) are here in the Indian capital on a study tour to share experiences with their Indian counterparts on occupational health and safety.

The delegation, headed by MTUC Assistant General Secretary A. Balasubramanian, has among others called on officials of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), one of the largest trade unions in India.

It also visited the Labour Institute of Faridabad, a leading institute which provides training on worksite safety.

Balasubmaniam said during the four-day trip beginning March 1, apart from the exchange of experiences, the delegation also shared good practices of trade unions in both countries.

"We also discussed various issues effecting trade union movements where globalisation and privatisation continue to be a great challenge to us," he lamented.

Other than the safety and health aspects of members, he said there was an exchange of views on how to provide on-the-job training and relevant courses for the advancement of workers.

"It was a fruitful trip for us where we learnt more from our counterparts on the administration of trade unions and at the same time, remain relevant to members," said Balasubramaniam.

HMS has nearly 10 million members while MTUC has about 500,000 members.
